MARIA BLACK
BACK POST SIZE GUIDE

It can be difficult to figure out which back post size to choose when buying a piece of piercing jewellery – either for your new or existing piercing. We recommend consulting with a professional piercer before choosing the size of your post, as this depends on the placement as well as the anatomy of your ear.

A new piercing has different requirements than a healed one. A new piercing will require a longer back post to make space for swelling, while an existing/healed piercing will often require a shorter post, as the jewellery should sit tightly to avoid irritation.

Choose Placement

The placement is very dependent on the jewellery you choose and will also have an impact on the post size needed. Be aware that cartilage piercings have a longer healing process than soft tissue piercings. You are always welcome to contact our piercing studios if you have questions about placement.

Choose Post Length

The post length of the jewellery will always depend on the placement you choose, as well as the unique anatomy of your ear. You should always consult with a professional piercer before choosing your post length, to ensure that it is suited for your ears anatomy as well as your specific situation.

See post size guide below to get an idea of what size to choose.

PLACEMENTS & SIZE

The below can only be viewed as guidelines, so please consult with a piercer before choosing your post size.

4MM: Only to be used for existing piercings. Suitable for Forward Helix piercings.

5MM: Only to be used for existing piercings. Suitable for lobe and cartilage piercings.

6MM: Can be used for new piercings, if a piercer allows, but it is not the recommended size for a new piercing.

7MM: Ideal for new piercings in the cartilage and in the lobe. The recommended size for most new piercings.

8MM: Ideal for new piercings in thicker parts of the cartilage as well as if you are prone to swelling with new piercings.

9MM: Ideal if you are experiencing swelling with your new piercing, and the pierced area is in need of more space.

10MM: Only to be used, if your new piercing is really swollen and needs some more space in order to heal properly.
